A Memoir to Remember

There are times, when only the well-thumbed, favourite book languishing quietly in the bookshelf will suffice to brighten a day, light a mood or even an entire weekend! And Vir Sanghvi’s memoir, A Rude Life did just that! An unexpected bonus was it rekindled my “josh” to write a review – something that I had thought of when I first received and read the signed copy! I certainly remain a little intimidated; but plunged right in fortified by the fact, that as reader, I did qualify!

Make Haste Slowly

A contradiction in terms, an oxymoron that that demands a story, or more to the point, sums up my scraggly progress at blogging! Ideas are a dime a dozen, but then so are tomorrows, and I never seem to reach today, even when I am making haste at less than the proverbial snail’s pace!

Compare this, with my more active and focussed neighbours. They sweep the darkness out with clock-work regularity the first thing every morning, while I just about put together my tea and tray. Therefore,

TWO WOODPECKERS, TWO NATURALISTS AND A GOVERNOR GENERAL

Out walking one beautiful golden, crisp morning in the bracing Assam winter, I looked up into a sal tree (Bombax ceiba) in full glorious bloom to spy a smaller version of the golden backed woodpecker. Its frenetic activity did not allow a full uninterrupted view, but its size, colours and habit were good indicators. Further on, the among the branches of a large rain tree (Albizia saman), I spotted the less flamboyant, much smaller but equally perky, grey capped pygmy woodpecker.
